FULL VIEW IS DEFFINITELY A GOOD CHOICE!

"A bugle in the morning mist, the great bull will raise his cry. Whistling, crying, screaming loud, a song unto the sky."

Have you guys ever heard a bugling elk in the rut? It's freakishly beautiful to listen to. A strange, eerie cry in the predawn hours as they call back and forth to the cows of their herd...*sighs* So wonderful.

Anyway, a completed gift picture for Jim and Kieth of Mount 'N High, my personal heaven. (The Taxidermy place) Jim asked once if I'd ever drawn a bugling elk before, and I answered honestly: No. So I got home and dug up a zillion issues of hunting magazine that my dad keeps. And I flipped through every single one, looking for the right picture and BAM. There it was.

The reference photo that I used is © to Bill Buckley, and can be found on page 68 of the August, 2002 issue of the Field and Stream Magazine. (Yeah, it's that old). So don't gripe about me using a ref photo, there's no shame in that at all guys. It helps you to make your drawings look realistic. Capiche'?

So enjoy the Bugle in the Morning Mist, and I apologize for there being no WIP shots of this. Just felt like trucking on through it without intereuptions. I'm getting a frame for this in the morning and taking it to Mount 'N High in the afternoon tomorrow or Thurday. Let's cross our fingers and hope they like it!

What sort of paper is that? It's plain old construction paper, sized at 9x12
What sort of pencils did you use to colour this with? Prismas! Through and through. Exactly 14 different colours were used on any given part of the body and horns. They were:
:bulletpurple:White
:bulletpurple:Beige
:bulletpurple:Deco Orange
:bulletpurple:Spanish Irange
:bulletpurple:Cool Grey 30%
:bulletpurple:French Grey 50%
:bulletpurple:Cool Grey 70%
:bulletpurple:French Grey 90%
:bulletpurple:Light Umber
:bulletpurple:Terra Cotta
:bulletpurple:Dark Brown
:bulletpurple:Dark Umber
:bulletpurple:Sepia
:bulletpurple:Black
How long did this take you? Roughly guesstimating at about 20 hours.
Why isn't there a background on this? I think a background would take away from the overall focus of the picture: the elk. I thought about it, but decided against it.
How much would a commission like this cost? Something like this would run upwards of $45. Backgrounds cost extra!

Enjoy, and please go easy on the crit guys, I worked hard on this and it's my first ever shot at an elk.

Art is © ME! (Don't you bloodi Frech even DAREto think to steal this...I'll rip out your cowardly throats if you do...:chainsaw:)

EDIT
And sorry about all the white specles on the scan, my scan bed is dirty and I can't get them off...which is odd...*breaks out the Awesome Orange* Cleeeeaning tiimmme!!! And sorry for the ripples on the paper. Also fault of the scan bed. Too small... >_< And the colours look off too!! Hooo boy, how awful can this scan get!!!
